On February 8, 2014, the press conference of Beijing and Zhangjiakou jointly bidding for the Winter Olympic Games was held in the main press center of Sochi Olympic Games. Yang Xiaochao, then vice mayor of Beijing, introduced the advantages of Beijing Zhangjiakou’s joint Olympic bid to Chinese and foreign journalists.
In terms of venues, only three new venues need to be built to bid for the Winter Olympics. According to the plan, if Beijing and Zhangjiakou successfully win the right to host the Winter Olympics, the Olympic central area in the north of Beijing, the capital gymnasium and Wukesong Sports Center in the west of the city will be used as venues for the five ice sports of the Winter Olympics. The opening and closing ceremonies are planned to be held in the bird’s nest of the National Stadium; Xiaohaituo mountain area in Yanqing County, located in the northwest of Beijing and about 90 kilometers away from the urban area, will build temporary site facilities based on the existing mountain terrain to be used as a alpine skiing competition site for snowmobiles, sledge events and skiing events; The prince City area of Chongli County, located in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, can meet the needs of the Winter Olympic Games after reconstruction and expansion. All snow competitions except snowmobile, sled events and alpine skiing can be held here. 12 competition venues are planned to be opened in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, of which only 3 venues need to be newly built (the national speed skating hall in downtown Beijing and two snow fields in Yanqing). The rest can meet the needs of the event after reconstruction, which reduces the operation cost to a great extent.
In terms of transportation, it takes only one hour for Beijing to Zhangjiakou high-speed railway. During the event, Beijing Tibet expressway, Beijing Xinjiang Expressway and National Highway 110 can meet the transportation needs during the competition. Taking the opportunity of bidding for the Winter Olympic Games, Beijing Zhangjiakou high-speed railway will shorten the distance between the urban area and the mountainous area. At that time, Yanqing can be reached from the urban area of Beijing in 20 minutes, and Zhangjiakou and Chongli Prince City snow competition area can be reached within one hour.
In terms of public support, according to the survey results, among the 2500 people in the 32 cities interviewed, the public support rate in Beijing is 91.8%, that in Zhangjiakou is as high as 99.5%, and the national average poll support rate is 94.8%.
