The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority has asked Accell Group’s cargo brand Babbae to stop selling its bikes after the company failed to investigate a series of reports of frame failures as required by law.
Babbae, which develops electric and pedal-powered cargo bikes for families, responded by saying it would temporarily stop selling all cargo bikes. The brand said it will immediately begin working with security authorities to provide them with information.
The agency began an investigation late last year after discovering multiple frame damage. Authorities said Babbo had received several reports of hull damage in recent years but had not investigated the cause. Although the safety department did not say whether any injuries were caused, “it could have resulted in very serious injuries. For example, children could fall out of trash cans while riding their bikes. This is especially true if it occurs in heavy traffic.”
Cargo bikes can be sold again once they are deemed safe and have “full technical documentation,” according to the safety department. The agency will work with the industry attorney to determine whether criminal charges are necessary.
Authorities said Gbagbo was responsible for organizing the recall. Consumers and businesses can contact the customer contact center.
Last month, Accell announced plans to merge its two factories in Heerenveen, where the Babbee brand will be produced. In 2018, Accell acquired Velosophy, which owns the Babbee brand.
