Maersk is expanding its fleet of electric vehicles in India. The latest announcement shows that the logistics company plans to deploy 500 small electric vehicles in 26 cities to meet first-, middle- and last-mile delivery demands driven by e-commerce.
Maersk currently operates 200 electric vehicles in 15 cities and expects this number to more than double by October 2023.
As before, the company is counting on a mix of electric tuk-tuks and small electric trucks, with launch scheduled for September 2022. Since then, awareness of electric vehicles to support delivery logistics in India has increased, followed by “unprecedented demand from India,” according to Maersk. several clients.”
While Maersk has not yet revealed the names of its customers, Vikash Agarwal, managing director of Maersk South Asia, said e-commerce has “experienced unprecedented growth in India over the past few years and has significant potential for further growth in the coming years.” He added that Maersk is “stepping up” to support the market.
Depending on the size, the van has a payload of 550 to 700 kilograms and a range of more than 120 kilometers.
Jitendra Kapoor, head of middle and last mile distribution, added that the range of electric vehicles available in the fleet is wide and customers will be provided with options depending on their business profile. “We have vehicles the size of two-wheelers that can deliver fresh, ready-to-eat salads to a customer in the NCR region or groceries and essentials to another customer across the country.” NCR stands for National Capital Region of Delhi.
Maersk said its existing fleet of 200 electric vehicles has covered more than 135,000 kilometres. The differences between electric tuk-tuks and electric trucks and their usage profiles remain unclear.
To further the rollout, Maersk is also investing in developing a charging network for its electric fleet and hopes to use solar energy to charge its warehouses across India. Further details have not been disclosed.
